Home What to Expect

We’re Here to Support You

At the University of Maryland, we believe in fostering a community of learning, growth, and accountability. If you’ve been referred to our office for a specific issue, this is an opportunity to reflect, share your perspective and work toward a resolution.

Our Commitment to You

We will listen: Your voice matters, and we want to hear your story.

We will guide: Our staff is here to explain the process and answer your questions.

We will support: You’ll have access to resources and services to help you through this experience.

The Process at a Glance

Here’s what you can expect when you engage with the Office of Student Conduct:

Step 1: Notification

You will receive a written notice explaining the concern and inviting you to meet with a staff member from our office. Take a moment to read this carefully, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

Step 2: Meeting with a Staff Member

Schedule a meeting with a staff member. This is your chance to:

  • Ask questions about the process.
  • Share your perspective and explain what happened in your own words.
  • Discuss next steps and potential resolutions.
  • Our staff is here to help you feel prepared and informed.

Step 3: Explore Support Resources

We encourage you to seek support during this time. Some helpful resources include:

  • Student Legal Aid Office: Get advice and guidance from trained staff who are familiar with the process.
  • Counseling Center: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, our counselors are here to help.
  • Academic/Other Campus Advisors: Understand the potential pathways if you are facing consequences that impact your academic standing.

Step 4: Resolution Process

This process is designed to be transparent, fair and educational. Depending on the situation, resolution may involve:

  • Sharing your story: You’ll have the opportunity to explain what happened.
  • Violations: A determination will be made as to whether you violated the policy/ies alleged
  • Educational discussions: Work with staff to determine the path forward.
  • Accountability outcomes: These may include administrative sanctions, grade sanctions, workshops, reflection activities or other steps to help you learn and grow.

Remember: Your Journey Continues

Mistakes happen, and challenges are a part of life. What matters most is how you respond and move forward. The Office of Student Conduct is here to help you learn, grow and continue your journey as a member of the University of Maryland community.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here for you.
